Ashford ICA was reformed and registered in 1965. Membership has gone from under 20
in the early years to 94 in 1994. Now it is a steady 50-60.
The highlight of the guild's 40th birthday celebrations in 2005 was when
40 members met President Mc Aleese in Arus an Uachtarain.
Many changes have taken place over the years. In the 1960s most women worked in the home and many didn't drive. The Guild has moved with the times and has endeavoured to meet the changing needs of the members. The summer outing was always a big event in the early years. With ease of travel and greater affluence horizons have widened. In 1996 some of our friends from Agadowey W.I in Co. Derry joined with us for a trip to Holland.
We have travelled to Vienna and at present we are planning a trip to Nice and the Cote D'Azur.
Ashford has always had some talented and generous teachers in the guild
ready and willing to share their expertise with their fellow members.
Perhaps the most talented craft teacher was Mollie Moore whose work
was known internationally.
Many members gained their skills in different crafts from her gifted teaching.
Drama has always been important to Ashford.
Plays and sketches have been written by guild members,
the indomitable Molly Moore and more recently Hilda Roche.
The Guild has won many awards at festivals and competitions over the years,
at county and national level, winning the national finals of the Eleanora Gibbon
in 1993 with a sketch as Gaeilge 'An Bureau i nDún Chaoin';
in 2003 with the one act play 'Heaven Help Me' by Ciaran Roche,
in 2006 with the dramatisation of the poem 'Oh I wish I'd looked after Me Teeth'
in 2009 with a take off of the TV show 'The School Around the Corner'
and in 2011 with a 15 minute variety show on the theme of Winter.
